Team roping is also known as heading and heeling and is a rodeo event that features a steer and two mounted riders. The term header refers to the rider who ropes the front of the steer, usually around the horns and the heeler is the rider who ropes the steer by its hind feet. Team roping is the only rodeo event where men and women compete equally together in professionally-sanctioned competition. It can be in single gender or mixed gender team.
This technique was originally developed by the cowboys working on the ranches where it was necessary to capture and restrain a full-grown animal that was too large to handle by a single person.
