Team Roping is the only team event in any rodeo circuit. It has its origins in the ranch chores of the past when the cowboys had to handle cattle that were too big and strong for a single person to manage. The technique used by the cowboys then has become a full-fledged sport now. Today it is a timed event that relies on the cooperation and skill synchronization of the cowboys and their horses.
The two cowboys involved in team roping have unique goals. The first, known as the header, does just what the name implies and ropes the head of the cattle. The other cowboy, known as the heeler, ropes the heels or legs.
Team roping is the only rodeo event where men and women compete equally together in professionally-sanctioned competition, as both single individuals and mixed gender teams.
